Shawn Hlookoff from Vancouver his song and video, Soldier, were played in Remembrance Day ceremonies, including my own school, last year. So, here’s another reminder to try to include it in your remembrances in a couple of weeks. Shawn wrote the song, Soldier, to raise awareness about the men and women who are risking their lives for their country and not receiving the respect they rightfully deserve. He encourages you to download the song.

With Remembrance Day coming up, I thought it might be useful to remind people of a telecollaborative project that my pal, Andy Lummis and I did a few years ago. This project evolved from a desire by Dovercourt to create a live presentation to their students of John McCrae’s poem, In Flanders Fields. The technical ability to create a multimedia projection was provided by hypermedia students at Jasper Place High. There are two versions that we invite teachers to use in their own school presentations. The first is a Performance Version during which your students can read In Flanders Field and there are some timing flexibilites. The second is what we call a Viewing version that is suitable as a canned presentation that can be shown to any audience. Each version come in Mac and PC formats.

Edmonton teacher, Arlyn Belden and her student teacher, Elmarie Steyn, discovered this website about trees.
Dr. Arbor Talks Trees focuses on tree anatomy and physiology. Students will learn some of the basic inner workings, chemical principles, and fun ways to get to know trees better. Dr. Arbor Talks Trees will also promote how your students can celebrate trees by developing their own Arbor Day activities.
This website is designed for students in sixth through eighth grades and will help them gain a greater appreciation of trees and their contributions to our lives. Don’t forget to check out the Teacher section – there are lesson ideas and a poster offer for your classroom!
