10 Inspiring Last Lectures and Commencement Speeches Everyone Should Watch

This collection came from List member, Kelly Sonora. Last lectures and commencement speeches dispense life lessons not traditionally taught in a classroom, and thanks to the viral power of YouTube, Last Lecture and commencement audiences are growing well beyond their intended numbers.

And on that note, I’d like to pass on my wishes for a Merry Christmas and hope that you all get a chance to relax and catch up with the important people in your lives. I’ll be back in January.

South Pole Quest

Ron Ellis and Gail Wozny sent this note the other day…

“We think we have a great idea for the teacher’s list. Ray Zahab is an acquaintance of ours from Chelsey Quebec. He used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day and as he puts it, “my hobby was drinking beer”. Since then he’s raced through the Moroccan desert, the Amazon jungle and the Sahara. For that one, Ray and two friends teamed up with Matt Damon’s ‘H20 Africa Foundation’, promoting awareness of the water crisis in Africa. Ray and the guys became the first humans to run across the Sahara from coast to coast. That success inspired Ray to start “Impossible 2 Possible”, a non-profit organization working to engage young people in planning for the planets’ future. On December 5th Ray and two others started on their over one-thousand kilometers journey from Hercules Inlet to the geographic South Pole facing ice, white out conditions, (where at times they can’t even see their feet) and minus-40 degree weather. They are trying to raise awareness of climate change and its threat to the planet. There is a Q & A forum for students and an updated daily log of their progress.”

Cramster

Edmonton teacher, Carmen Michaud told me about Cramster, a global math and science study community that launched in 2003. It is a place where students can interact online with teachers and their peers to help solve problems based on subjects such as physics, calculus, and chemistry. The mostly-free online community features a number of study materials, such as textbook solutions and practice exams, as well as an interactive question-and-answer board that is monitored by Cramster “Subject Matter Experts.” Students can post questions, and registered teachers post guidance in response. Earlier this year, Cramster launched a Facebook application called Courses 2.0, where Facebook members can find and communicate with one another on the Cramster web site outside of the classroom. They have a premium service for a monthly fee but most of the service is available for free.

Histografica

List member, Agata Dras, recommended HistoGrafica the other day. HistoGrafica is a new portal created by Dras and a few other software and web design specialists who are also at the same time passionate about local history. It is an online community whose aim is to show in pictures how the world changed throughout time – they are creating an archive where people can look up a town or a street and see what that place looked like 50 years ago, 30 years ago and so on. Members share their pictures through our site, tag them by date and locate them on a map; as a result the archive is expanding to show the “fourth dimension” of all places. There are a few thousand pictures already, mostly from the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Germany and Poland. HistoGrafica promises to be of great benefit to both students and teachers alike.
