This category of recommendations would work well with students who are in high school.

Automotivator

automotivatorI don’t think I’ve ever recommended this resource that I’ve used in several pd sessions. Automotivator allows you or students to create those corporate style motivational posters. You could use the tool to create those traditional posters or find other uses such as satire or to frame a student response. Students may use stock images or upload their own, add text and save the jpg to a local computer.

Tax Software

taxesEdmonton teacher, David Salmon, told me that the Canada Revenue Agency makes available certain versions of tax software. Having taught that tax module for a few years, this might be an interesting alternative to all the broken pencil lead and eraser crumbs I vividly remember! Today’s recommendation is based on the fact that some products have free offerings, depending on individual tax situations or income levels. Please verify the company’s web site to determine if you qualify for these free offerings or if you may use them with your students.

Who Hires Math Majors?

Raspberry Pi

rasp_piI’ve really struggled with this recommendation for a long time now. When long-time List member and staunch supporter, Joel Heffner, told me about Raspberry Pi, I was really excited about the concept. And then I saw the $35 price tag. It’s been my habit-turned-solid-policy to never recommend on The Teacher List, a resource that comes with a price tag. Joel and I had some discussion about it and this one time, with a complete heads-up about it costing money, I would like to recommend this device for use in teaching students how to program a computer.

So, what is this Raspberry Pi? The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. It will be better to link to the FAQ page so you can learn more – it’s quite an intriguing little device!

Aim High 101 Tips

List member Kevin Cantelon suggested this collection of Teen Tips. I wonder if sometimes we take for granted that our students have read the manual and already know these things?

Hidden Costs Video Series

Here’s an eye-opening series of videos produced by InsuranceQuotes.com. From the site, “The purpose of insurance is risk management. What about the risks we confront everyday — the risks inherent in the food we eat and the brands we obsess over?” The clips are hosted on YouTube and include report card type assessments of the impact of soda, data theft, and other familiar products.

  • Belize Literacy Program

In November 2012, members of the Belize Ministry of Education, principals, and lead teachers met in each of the six districts for two days of conversations and discussions around the challenges and next steps in integrating technology to support teaching and learning in Belize. The sessions highlighted global trends and challenges from the K-12 Horizon Report, the National Education Technology Standards (NETS) for students, teachers, and administrators, as well as an overview of the content from the August 2012 technology workshop for teachers.
