Splattershmup

splattershmupWhat happens when you combine classic arcade game movements with painting action? This summer, I had the pleasure of meeting Andy Phelps. Among other titles, he is the founder and director of the RIT Center for Media, Arts, Games, Interaction and Creativity (MAGIC). Andy asked this question and had the skills and resources to explore the answers, resulting in Splattershmup. Splattershmup is a game that allows players to “reflect on their in-game actions and strategy through visual reflection, and to approach the creation of art as an arena of action.” The art that is created in the game can then be shared and discussed. It’s a really cool concept and perfect for a Friday recommendation.

Mocomi How To Draw Tutorials

This fun collection comes from Mocomi.com of India. It contains a series of animations that shows students how to draw several things like airplanes, dogs and dragons. The video is clear enough to show what the artist’s brush is doing – and it can be replicated on paper or digitally. Once a few have been done, a student could potentially have enough techniques to try making their own.

Make Your Own Pop-Ups

Austin, Texas teacher, Dora Quiroz, told me about a fun site that may be of use as the school year wraps up. Author and illustrator Robert Sabuda shares many easy to make pop up cards with easy to follow directions. Download the pdf pattern and print on cardstock. The instructions are included in each pdf. Students may even want to color the patterns before they fold and glue them together.
