(I didn’t realize until I researched this site that they’re from my hometown of Edmonton!)

Keep an eye on the left side of the screen where the current elevation is indicated. When you’ve reached the South Summit, have a look around and then explore the menu on the right side for more information on the Sherpa community and the April 2014 tragedy.

I like the way this site breaks it down and presents the definitions — and if you look along the right sidebar, there is a no-cost download of a fantastic poster in pdf format!

Flat Design v. Realism https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2014/06/flat-design-v-realism/ https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2014/06/flat-design-v-realism/#comments Mon, 09 Jun 2014 14:45:10 +0000 https://www.theteacherlist.ca/?p=4135 flat_realMy brother, Brian, shared this site with me. It’s a discussion of the “Realistic” v. “Flat” design trends in web design. The interface is fun as students scroll down through the story, ending in a keyboard game-battle between the two. I liked the message at the end to wrap up the experience.

Students are directed to click and drag around while hot-spots appear to provide video re-enactments and interviews with survivors.

Look Up https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2014/05/look-up/ https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2014/05/look-up/#comments Mon, 05 May 2014 15:26:47 +0000 https://www.theteacherlist.ca/?p=4107 lookupThis video poem has been making the rounds this week. It’s a poignant reflection on how mobile devices, designed for making connections, has in fact, made people more lonely and disconnected. It would make a good conversation starter in older classrooms. Heads-up: the author uses the word ‘bastard’ though, so it might not be suitable for younger ears.

She’s the Interpretive Planning Assistant for the project, Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum in Ottawa. She had information on an exciting new project that teaches students about the Cold War Era. Lara goes on to say, “We are excited to announce the recent completion of My Project
Berlin, which makes original, curriculum-relevant lesson plans and projects available online and free of charge to teachers across the country.” The projects will provide teachers with the option to have their students’ work featured in an upcoming exhibit at the museum, and connect with other classes from across the country via Twitter and other online media.

Students connect their note-taking to their GDrives. The notes are synchronized to the timeline of the video and then synched to GDrive for easy access and sharing. There are a few features that they could add like real-time collaboration and the option to save as a Google Doc but it’s a great start.
