IFTTT – If This Then That https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/06/ifttt-if-this-then-that/ https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/06/ifttt-if-this-then-that/#comments Thu, 06 Jun 2013 12:30:25 +0000 https://www.theteacherlist.ca/?p=3754 iftttWouldn’t it be great to have an automated web assistant? You can now with IFTTT – a site built on the idea that a conditional statement can be applied to any situation with our various web 2.0 accounts. For example, IFTTT offers a ‘recipe’ that uploads any tagged photos of you on Facebook to your Dropbox folder. Another is to send yourself an email if the forecast includes rain/snow/sleet/hurricanes. There are over 3000 pages of shared recipes from IFTTT users and you can make your own as well. Don’t even get me started on all the possibilities with your Google Apps for Education tools!

EdCanvas https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/05/edcanvas/ https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/05/edcanvas/#comments Thu, 30 May 2013 15:37:17 +0000 https://www.theteacherlist.ca/?p=3738 edcanvasHere’s a new resource that has been evolving over the last few months. The best way to describe EdCanvas.com is a gathering tool. Students and teachers simply drag resources like urls, images, and files to each box. The boxes can then be presented like slides but the cool thing is that the collected resources are live within the box. Users can also share their canvasses with each other. Try having students or session attendees collect resources during a lesson – it’s quite powerful!

Are You A Comic Sans Criminal? https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/05/are-you-a-comic-sans-criminal/ https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/05/are-you-a-comic-sans-criminal/#comments Wed, 29 May 2013 13:38:40 +0000 https://www.theteacherlist.ca/?p=3734 OK, I’m going to wade back into the debate on Comic Sans but I’ll put the blame squarely on my pal, Theresa Paltzat’s shoulders since she shared this site with me. Someone once pointed out that the only appropriate use of Comic Sans as a font is if you are an eight year old girl writing poems about unicorns. I am in that camp and do not use the font. So I enjoyed this quick presentation on why font choice in a piece is so important – and it’s a good one to share with your students as they learn about design.

Raspberry Pi https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/04/raspberry-pi/ https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/04/raspberry-pi/#comments Thu, 11 Apr 2013 14:16:18 +0000 https://www.theteacherlist.ca/?p=3678 rasp_piI’ve really struggled with this recommendation for a long time now. When long-time List member and staunch supporter, Joel Heffner, told me about Raspberry Pi, I was really excited about the concept. And then I saw the $35 price tag. It’s been my habit-turned-solid-policy to never recommend on The Teacher List, a resource that comes with a price tag. Joel and I had some discussion about it and this one time, with a complete heads-up about it costing money, I would like to recommend this device for use in teaching students how to program a computer.

So, what is this Raspberry Pi? The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. It will be better to link to the FAQ page so you can learn more – it’s quite an intriguing little device!

Vocaroo https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/04/vocaroo/ https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/04/vocaroo/#comments Tue, 09 Apr 2013 12:57:31 +0000 https://www.theteacherlist.ca/?p=3672 Here’s a fantastic little tool from @vocaroo that you and your students can use to record voice. The interface is very simple – it’s a one-button click to start recording. Once your piece is finished, students can retry or have a listen. Then, the powerful part comes – one may then save that recording in a variety of formats – a sharing link, an email link, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, StumbleUpon and a variety of others. Students can also generate a QR code with one click – and that gets me thinking of many different possibilities!
