There is a “more words” button that keeps the creativity flowing.

The Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary is a collection of visual illustrations. The site explains itself: “The Visual Dictionary Online is an interactive dictionary with an innovative approach. From the image to the word and its definition, the Visual Dictionary Online is an all-in-one reference. Search the themes to quickly locate words, or find the meaning of a word by viewing the image it represents. What’s more, theVisual Dictionary Online helps you learn English in a visual and accessible way. The Visual Dictionary Online is ideal for teachers, parents, translators and students of all skill levels.”

From the site: @LettersOfNote “is an attempt to gather and sort fascinating letters, postcards, telegrams, faxes, and memos. Scans/photos where possible. Fakes will be sneered at. Updated as often as possible; usually each weekday.”

The verb is removed from each statement in a cloze activity. Students receive immediate feedback about each answer and if they make a mistake, the response explains the correct answer.

https://www.theteacherlist.ca/2013/02/40-things-to-do-with-a-text/#commentsThu, 21 Feb 2013 14:33:03 +0000https://www.theteacherlist.ca/?p=3583The title of this post says it all – it’s a quick brainstorming effort by a group of English Language Teachers. There are ideas here that would work outside of the English classroom too. The authors state, “The ideas are presented in the order they came to us, so there is a kind of logic to the list but it certainly isn’t in order of effectiveness. We would simply like to present them here with a little commentary on each. None of the ideas is anything new; the fun is in seeing them all together and realising how much more we can (and sometimes actually) do with texts in the classroom. Neither is the list exhaustive, we are sure that you will have come up with ideas that we do not mention here. If you do, we would love to hear about them so please drop us a line at the email address at the end of this article.”
