My friend, Steve Nyitrai, pointed out this Google Map application that analyses a timeline of war and conflict on a global scale. If students move the timeline back and forth, the map will scale to its widest view. Move the map to the centre crosshair and adjust the slider to zoom in. There is a floating window with a list of battles relevant to the view and information buttons to read brief outlines of each conflict.
